Adults speak in the similar somber tones wherever you are.

 

Mothers employ the same tell-tale lilt and lowering of voice that only mothers
Or grandmothers can use.
Especially when talking of so and so’s health

Or, whomever’s wealth...

 

They discuss how the times have changed

And why so too.

 

From the conversation occurring at the doorstep
Soothing sounds fight themselves through walls.

 

They natter like cooped hens.
The intonation of their voices,
Rising and falling as they make a verbal show

And statement of false affection
And subdued competition.
